Description
This cabbage and sausage skillet recipe is a hearty one-pan dinner made with smoked sausage, tender cabbage, and bold spices. Perfect for a quick, low-carb weeknight meal that’s easy to make and full of flavor. Great for meal prep, gluten-free, and family-friendly.
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
14 ounces smoked sausage, sliced
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium head green cabbage, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Add the sliced sausage and sear until browned and crispy on both sides, about 5-7 minutes. Remove sausage from the skillet and set aside.
2. In the same skillet, add remaining olive oil if needed. Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 3-4 minutes. Stir in minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
3. Add chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir well to coat it with oil and aromatics. Season with salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Cook for 10-12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender and golden at the edges.
4. Return the sausage to the skillet and mix well. Add red pepper flakes if using. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until everything is heated through.
5. Serve hot directly from the skillet. Enjoy on its own or with mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.
Notes
This dish reheats well and makes great leftovers.
You can substitute turkey or chicken sausage for a lighter version.
The cabbage will cook down significantly, so don’t worry if it seems like too much at first.
