It’s easy to prepare, perfect for weeknight dinners or meal prep, and bursting with hoisin, soy sauce, honey, and five spice. A must-try for lovers of Asian-inspired chicken recipes.
Ingredients
2 pounds chicken thighs
3 tablespoons hoisin sauce
2 tablespoons soy sauce
2 tablespoons honey
1 teaspoon Chinese five spice powder
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon sesame oil
Few drops red food coloring (optional)
Instructions
1. Whisk together hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, five spice powder, garlic, ginger, rice vinegar, sesame oil, and red food coloring (if using) in a bowl until combined.
2. Place chicken thighs in a large zip-top bag or bowl and pour marinade over. Mix to coat. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours, preferably overnight.
3. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Place marinated chicken on a foil-lined baking sheet.
4. Roast for 25–30 minutes, flipping halfway through, until caramelized and fully cooked.
5. For extra char, broil on high for 2–3 minutes at the end. Watch closely to avoid burning.
6. Remove from oven and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve hot.
Notes
This recipe works best with boneless, skinless chicken thighs for maximum flavor and moisture.
Don’t skip the Chinese five spice—it’s key to that authentic Char Siu flavor.
Letting the chicken marinate overnight deepens the taste and gives you that signature BBQ richness.
