Description

This homemade crispy onion rings recipe features thick sweet onions coated in a seasoned batter and crunchy panko. It’s the ultimate snack or side dish that’s golden, airy, and addictively crunchy. Perfect for burgers, game day, or dipping with your favorite sauces!

Ingredients

1 large sweet onion

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup cornstarch

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon black pepper

1 egg

3/4 cup cold sparkling water or club soda

1 1/2 cups panko breadcrumbs

Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

1. Peel and slice the onion into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate and soak in cold water for 10 minutes.

2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, garlic powder, paprika, and pepper.

3. Add egg and cold sparkling water to the bowl and whisk until smooth.

4. Remove onion rings from water, pat dry, and dip into the batter.

5. Coat each battered ring in panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to adhere.

6. Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F.

7. Fry onion rings in batches for 2-3 minutes per side until golden brown.

8. Drain on paper towels and sprinkle with extra salt.

9. Serve hot with your favorite dips.

Notes

These onion rings are best served fresh for peak crunch.

For a lighter option, try air frying at 400°F for 8-10 minutes.

Use red onions for a pop of color and bolder flavor.
