Description

Ingredients

1 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

2 teaspoons baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1 1/4 cups hot water


Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease an 8 inch square baking dish.

2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, granulated sugar, 1/4 cup cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.

3. Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract, then stir just until a smooth batter forms.

4. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish.

5. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar with the remaining 1/4 cup cocoa powder.

6. Sprinkle the brown sugar and cocoa mixture evenly over the batter.

7. Slowly pour the hot water over the top. Do not stir.

8. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, until the top looks set and cakey while a pudding sauce forms underneath.

9. Let the cake rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving warm.

Notes

Do not stir after pouring the hot water over the top or the pudding layer will not form properly.

Serve it warm for the best texture, since the sauce thickens more as it cools.

A scoop of vanilla ice cream makes this dessert even more indulgent and balances the rich chocolate flavor beautifully.
