Description

A soft, slightly sweet homemade Amish white bread recipe made with pantry staples. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or served warm with butter. This simple bread stays soft for days and is a classic family favorite.

Ingredients

2 cups warm water

2/3 cup granulated sugar

1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast

1 1/2 teaspoons salt

1/4 cup vegetable oil

6 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Stir to dissolve, then sprinkle in the yeast. Let sit for 10 minutes until frothy.

2. Stir in the oil and salt. Add the flour gradually, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.

3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm area until doubled in size, about 1 to 1.5 hours.

5. Punch down the dough, divide into two equal parts, and shape into loaves. Place in greased loaf pans.

6. Cover and let rise again for 30 to 45 minutes, until loaves rise above the pan edges.

7. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30 minutes until tops are golden and loaves sound hollow when tapped.

8. Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack. Slice and serve.

Notes

Keep the dough slightly sticky for the softest texture.

Don’t skip the second rise for fluffy, tall loaves.

Use a thermometer to ensure your water is about 110°F for best yeast activation.
