Description

This Patty Melts with Secret Sauce recipe is the ultimate comfort food sandwich. Made with juicy ground beef, caramelized onions, Swiss and cheddar cheese, and a homemade zesty sauce, it’s grilled to golden perfection. Great for lunch or dinner, this classic patty melt recipe brings diner-style flavor right to your kitchen.

Ingredients

4 slices rye bread

1 lb ground beef (80/20)

2 yellow onions, thinly sliced

4 slices Swiss cheese

4 slices cheddar cheese

4 tbsp butter

1/4 cup mayonnaise

2 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp sweet pickle relish

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp garlic powder

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Slice the onions and cook in butter over medium-low heat until caramelized and golden, about 20–25 minutes. Set aside.

2. In a small bowl, mix mayonnaise, ketchup, relish, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Season to taste with salt and pepper to create the secret sauce.

3. Shape ground beef into oval patties slightly larger than the bread slices. Season with salt and pepper. Cook in a skillet for 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.

4. Spread secret sauce on the inside of each bread slice. Layer Swiss cheese, a beef patty, caramelized onions, cheddar cheese, and top with the second bread slice.

5. Butter the outside of each sandwich and cook in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown on both sides and cheese is melted.

6. Serve hot and enjoy the melty, crispy deliciousness.

Notes

Make sure your skillet isn’t too hot or the bread will brown before the cheese melts.

If you like heat, add a dash of hot sauce to the secret sauce for a spicy kick.

Use marble rye or sourdough if you prefer a different bread texture or flavor.
