Description
This Traditional Southern Fried Apples recipe is a classic Southern side dish made with tender apples, butter, brown sugar, and warm spices. Perfect as a dessert or savory pairing, these skillet apples bring comfort and nostalgia to your table with minimal effort.
Ingredients
4 large apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or Fuji)
4 tablespoons butter
1/3 cup brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
Instructions
1. Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/4-inch thick wedges. Toss them with lemon juice to prevent browning.
2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter until just bubbly.
3. Add sliced apples and sprinkle with brown sugar. Stir gently to coat all the slices.
4. Cook apples for 5 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they start to soften.
5. Add cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and salt. Stir and cook for another 3 to 5 minutes, or until apples are tender and caramelized.
6. Remove from heat and serve warm as a side, topping, or dessert.
Notes
Use firm apple varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp to avoid mushy results.
Adjust sugar to taste depending on how tart your apples are.
Add a splash of bourbon or maple syrup for extra depth.
