Description

Christmas Ooey Gooey Butter Cookies are soft, rich, buttery holiday cookies made with cake mix, cream cheese, and powdered sugar for a crackly snow-covered finish. These easy Christmas butter cookies are perfect for cookie exchanges, dessert trays, holiday parties, and festive baking days at home.

Ingredients

1 box yellow cake mix

8 oz cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup powdered sugar, plus more as needed for rolling

2 tablespoons holiday sprinkles, optional

Instructions

1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and butter until smooth and creamy.

2. Add the egg and vanilla extract, then mix until fully combined.

3. Add the yellow cake mix and stir until a thick sticky dough forms.

4. Cover the bowl and chill the dough for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

5. Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

6. Scoop the chilled dough into small balls, about 1 tablespoon each.

7. Roll each dough ball generously in powdered sugar until fully coated.

8. Place the coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each one.

9. Add holiday sprinkles on top if using.

10. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until the edges are set and the tops are crackled.

11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Use full-fat cream cheese for the best rich and gooey texture.

Chilling the dough is important because it keeps the cookies thick and makes the sticky dough easier to roll.

Roll the dough in a heavy coat of powdered sugar so the baked cookies get that classic crinkled look.
