Description

Southern Fried Cabbage is a classic comfort food side dish made with tender cabbage, crispy bacon, onion, and garlic, all cooked together in one skillet for rich Southern flavor. This easy Southern Fried Cabbage recipe is perfect for weeknight dinners, holiday meals, or anytime you want a simple cabbage side dish that is hearty, savory, and full of homestyle taste.

Ingredients

6 slices bacon

1 medium head green cabbage, chopped

1 medium yellow onion, sliced

3 cloves garlic, minced

2 tablespoons butter

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes

Instructions

1. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove it to a plate and leave about 2 tablespoons of bacon drippings in the skillet.

2. Add the sliced onion to the skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until softened. Stir in the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.

3. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir in the butter, salt, black pepper, paprika, and red pepper flakes. Toss well so the cabbage is coated.

4. Cook the cabbage for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it is tender and slightly golden around the edges.

5. Crumble the cooked bacon and return it to the skillet. Stir, taste, adjust seasoning if needed, and serve warm.

Notes

Cook the cabbage a little less if you want it to keep more texture and bite.

For even more savory flavor, you can add a small splash of chicken broth while the cabbage cooks.

This dish reheats well, so it is a great make-ahead side for busy weeknights.
